New research reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing these drugs need to be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the amplified weight return.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden return of appetite.
"It was like a switch activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
This challenge is compounded if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among females than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success relies on integrated behavioural support.
