Josh Hazlewood has been cleared to become part of the Australian team ahead of the opening Ashes match after an injury scare, although compatriot the paceman has been ruled out

The two experienced hamstring injuries playing for their state team against Victoria in domestic cricket recently

Medical examinations revealed Hazlewood (34) avoided a muscle strain. The uncapped Abbott, 33, sustained a "moderate grade" injury

Captain Pat Cummins is unavailable for the first Test, starting November 21, therefore missing of a key pace option like Hazlewood might have represented a serious concern

Abbott would have been unlikely to play during the Western Australia Test, while Hazlewood will combine Mitchell Starc and Scott Boland as the primary pace attack

Cummins, who is recovering from spinal concerns, is thought to be on track to return for the second Test commencing December fourth

Batter Steve Smith will lead Australia during the captain's recovery

Similar to most Aussie squad members, Hazlewood is involved in ongoing fixtures of Sheffield Shield matches building up to the England series

Before this week, he hadn't featured a first-class match for New South Wales in more than a year

He felt tightness in his hamstring towards the end of Victoria's second innings during the match and left the field as a precaution

The two bowlers came out to bat during the follow-on innings during their defeat by three hundred runs
